CONFIGURING PC-PINE

For the most part, PC-Pine configures itself when you install it on your computer. There are a few configuration settings, however, that you may wish to change, especially if you are accessing your email from more than one computer.

To access PC-Pine's configuration screen, type S (Setup) and then C (Configuration) from the Main Menu.

NOTE: In PC-Pine, you can use your mouse to navigate. Just single-click (or double-click, depending on what you want to do) on the option.

FOLDERS

If you access your email from more than one computer, you may want to configure PC-Pine to access your remote folders and address book(s). This requires that your folders be on the deskmail server. The majority of users already have their folders on the deskmail server. If you have moved them elsewhere, you will need move them back to the deskmail server. For more information, send email to: help@cac.washington.edu

ADDRESS BOOK

In order to access your pre-existing Pine address book using PC-Pine, you need to create a copy of the address book on the deskmail server (note that these steps are run from Pine 4 on your Homer/Dante account rather than from PC-Pine):

  1. Run Pine 4 on Homer/Dante
  2. At the Pine Main Menu, type S (Setup) and then A (AddressBooks).
  3. Choose A (Add Pers Abook).
  4. Fill in the form like this:
    Server Name: UW_NetID.deskmail.washington.edu
    Folder Name: ADDRBOOK
    NickName : Master Addressbook

(where "UW_NetID" is replaced with your own UW NetID or login name.)

  5. Type <Control> X (eXit/save) and then Y (yes) to exit and save your changes.
  6. Type E to exit the Setup screen.

Now you need to copy your existing addresses to the new address book on the desk mail server:

  1. Still using Pine on Homer/Dante, select A (AddressBook) at the Pine Main Menu.
  2. Select > to view your ".addressbook" Personal Address Book, or type <Return>.
  3. Type ; (Select), then A (All) to mark all the address book entries.
  4. Type A (Apply), then S (Save).
  5. Choose S (Save) at the next prompt and you should see the following:
Save to which addrbook : .addressbook
    ^G Help ^P Prev AddrBook
^C Cancel Ret Accept ^N Next AddrBook

  6. Use <Control> N to select the "Master Addressbook" (or whichever nickname you chose in step 4 above).
  7. Press <Return> (Accept) to copy all your address book entries to the new address book.

NOTE: You'll probably want to use S (Setup) A (Addressbook) again and delete the configuration for the personal address book so that Pine on Homer/Dante will only be using the new one on the deskmail server. That way you will prevent confusion about which address book is which.

UW DIRECTORY

By default, PC-Pine is set up to use the online student and staff/faculty directories from within the Compose Message screen. This is a handy feature if you would like to be able to type in a person's name in the To or Cc fields and have PC-Pine look up the name in the online directories. It can, however, slow the performance of PC-Pine, especially if you are connected via modem. If you would like to disable PC-Pine from using the online directories from within the Compose Message screen, follow the directions below. You will still be able to use the directory service (see page 10 for more information).

  1. At the Main Menu, press S (Setup) or double-click on the Setup option.
  2. Now choose D (Directory) and then A (Add Dir).
  3. "directory.washington.edu" should be highlighted. Press <Return> to edit the settings for this directory.

  1. Under the "features" heading, you should see the following:
    Set Feature Name
    --- ---------------------- [X] use-implicitly-from-composer [ ] lookup-addrbook-contents [ ] save-search-criteria-not-result

Select "use-implicitly-from-composer" and type X (Set/Unset) (or double-click that field) so the X disappears from the Set column.

  2. When you are finished filling in the above information, choose E (Exit) and Y (yes) to save your changes.
