Since PC-Pine runs from your personal computer, working with
attachments is easy: you can attach and detach files directly from/to your
computer's disk drive(s). Attachments are generally binary files such as
Word files, Excel spreadsheets, or graphics. You can, however, attach any
type of file, plain text (ASCII) or non-text (binary), to an email
message.
ATTACHING FILES
To attach a file to an email message:
- Compose an email message and fill in the recipient's email address in
the To field. In the Attchmnt field, type <Control>
J to attach a file.
- Type in the direct path to the file you want to attach and press
<Return> or type
<Control> T to browse for your file.
- Type a short comment to go with your attachment (this is optional) and
press <Return>.
- Your file is now attached and you can continue composing the message
as usual.
You can also "drag-and-drop" attachments in to an email
message:
- Compose an email message and fill in the recipient's email address in
the To field.
- On your computer, locate the file you would like to attach.
- Using your mouse, drag the file's icon to the Compose Message screen
in PC-Pine.
- The file will show up in the Attachmnt field and you can continue
composing the message as usual. Note that the cursor does not have
to be in the Attchmnt field when you "drag-and-drop" the file to be
attached.
DETACHING FILES
To detach a file from an email message that was sent to
you:
- While viewing the message with the attachment, type > (ViewAttch).
- With the attachment highlighted, type S (Save). PC-Pine
displays the following:
SAVE: Copy attachment to file in home directory:
- Your home directory is C:\ by default. If you would like to
save the file in a different location, type the full path (including a
file name) to the location on your computer to which you want to save the
attachment and press <Return>. You can
also type <Control> T to browse for a
location.
- A copy of the attachment has now been saved to your computer.
If you would like to choose the location of the default
directory in which PC-Pine saves attachments and exported messages, follow
these directions:
- From PC-Pine's Main Menu, choose S (Setup) and C
(Config).
- Press W (WhereIs) and search for "current-dir". You should
find the following line:
[ ] use-current-dir
- Press X (Set/Unset) so that an X is placed in the box.
- Press E (Exit) and Y (Yes) to exit and save your
changes.
- Right click on your PC-Pine icon in C:\Program Files\UWICK\PC-Pine (or
C:\Program Files\PC-Pine\ if you downloaded the program).
- Choose "Properties."
- Click on the "Shortcut" tab.
- In the "Start in:" field, fill in the directory in which you would
like PC-Pine to save attachments and exported messages. Note that you can
always choose a different directory at the Save or Export prompt from
within PC-Pine.
VIEWING AN ATTACHMENT DIRECTLY WITHIN PC-PINE
To view an attachment directly within PC-Pine without having to
first detach it:
While viewing the message with the attachment, type >
(ViewAttch).
With the attachment highlighted, type > (View).
The appropriate program will run on your computer, and the attachment
will be opened.
NOTE: Your computer must be setup to associate certain file
types with the proper software in order for this to work. Most PCs are
automatically configured in this way.
