Course Overview and Outline

Day 1: class format, command syntax, help, file system

Goals

  • introductions, get to know each other
  • understand class format and expectations
  • identify class members goals for the course
  • understand basics of Unix command syntax
  • introduce online tools for getting help
  • understand the basics of the Unix file system
  • introduce file system tools/commands

Activities

  • discuss goals and introduce class
  • login, work on command syntax
  • "help" hands-on exercises
  • practice with file system commands

Homework

Day 2: file operations, the shell, editors, networking

Goals

  • review file system tools
  • introduce need for customization
  • introduce basic shell concepts
  • introduce creating, editing and viewing text files
  • introduce networking and clients (ssh, scp)

Activities

  • discussion of homework results
  • file system practice
  • editing practice
  • network discussion

Homework

Day 3: job control, customizing your account, utilities

Goals

  • review basic shell concepts
  • customize .cshrc files
  • introduce job control
  • introduce scripts
  • cover more utilities
