General Topic: Recent Operating System Updates
GROUPS:
1. Windows XP Scott Barker, Information School
Ryan Campbell, C&C
Microsoft's Windows XP has been touted as the most significant
Windows upgrade since Windows 95. What's new, what's improved,
what's worse, and is a Windows XP upgrade something you should
or shouldn't be considering? Scott Barker of the Information School
and Ryan Campbell of C&C will discuss their experiences with
this new OS. Come and share your thoughts and questions.
2. Macintosh OSX Bob Majors, Language Learning Center
John Spady, Friday Harbor Laboratories
Apple's Mac OS X is a BSD-UNIX and Unicode-based core operating
system (called "Darwin") which uses Apple's newest graphical
user interface (called "Aqua"). Bob and John run OS X servers for
QuickTime Streaming, file services, and lab desktop management
using Apple's NetBoot capability--they also have some experience
with client-side foreign language capabilities. Share your
experiences/battles, ask questions, and seek wisdom.
3. RedHat7.2 Ed Mulligan, Earth & Space Sciences

cares to admit. (before last years merger with Geophysics, he
worked for Geology) He is a Linux advocate and has used Linux
since RedHat 2.1 back in 1995. An RH-Linux box is his preferred
desktop machine. (but he has to keep a mac and a wintel machine
around for assorted compatibility and testing.)

PRESENTATIONS
=============
1:30 The "Early Email" Project - Gary Prohaska, Computing & Communications
The goal of this project is to enable new faculty and staff to
obtain a UW NetID as soon as the hiring decision has been made.
This will (among other things) enable email access on or before
their first day of work.
The problem being addressed is the latency inherent in the current
paper-PAF system, i.e. it takes up to two weeks for the initial
hire paperwork to be processed. Until this happens (i.e. until an
employee shows up in HEPPS) the new employee is not authorized for
a UWNetID. The new system provides a means of expediting the
process. It is not a permanent solution that addresses all
initial hire concerns (e.g. parking, id cards, etc.).
1:45 Whither Wireless: Campus Directions - Terry Gray, C&C
o Overview of wireless data communication technologies,
including methods used for DAN, LAN, MAN and WAN networking.
o Description of 802.11 standards for wireless networking, and
some of the issues involved in setting up such networks.
o Discussion of where and how C&C sees wireless (especially
802.11) networking fitting into the UW campus infrastructure.
Report on 802.11 testing - Mark McNair, C&C
Mark will attempt to demonstrate configuring an Apple AirPort
access point to provide wireless (802.11) connection to the campus
network.
2:45 Refreshments - compliments of Computing & Communications
3:00 Piloting Palms: Hype and Hope David Wilson, Health Sciences
Academic Services
A look at the current state of Palm OS based devices and usage
patterns here at the UW, based on my experience supporting them in
an educational and clinical setting in the Health Sciences (Hype).
We will examine the current "one device one user" model employed
by Palm and efforts to make them work with currently available
systems and resources. We will also look at what might be coming
down the pipe from Palm and third parties that might make it
easier to make the Palm a good net citizen (Hope).

* Desktop Email Issues
This session will discuss the centrally provided services available for
supporting use of desktop email at the UW, how those services are
configured, and how they can be accessed separately or as a group.
Some of the specific topics that will be explored include:
- What central services are available for desktop email, and what
protocols are supported?
- What's the configuration of the deskmail servers and their
relationships with other C&C hosts?
- What clients are supported, and what other clients work?
- What configuration of the clients are on the UWICK kit, and what
advantage is there to using the UWICK?
- What's available in the LDAP white pages service and how do you use
it from email?
- Email filtering and IMAP - what works on which desktop clients, and
what's up with server-side filtering on the IMAP servers?
Refreshments (Thanks to Arts & Sciences)
BREAKOUT Sessions (attend one of the following)
* Pay-for-Printing Solutions for Student Computer Labs
Several major UW units have adopted pay-for-printing
solutions to help defray the costs of providing printing
for students. More and more departments are adopting
such solutions, and others are interested in participating.
This talk will examine how units are using
pay-for-printing schemes, which schemes are being used
and how effective these schemes are in defraying costs
and providing service.
Presenters will include
the UW Copy Centers

2:00 BREAK
2:10 UWIN: Phase out, Follow-on
o Why is UWIN being phased out? - Ian Taylor
o Future access to Library services - Bill Jordan
o UW Libraries Information Gateway:
Overview and database architecture - Alex Wade
2:55 UWIRED "Catalyst" project - Mark Donovan
This presentation provides a detailed overview of the Catalyst project
(formerly known as "YourClass") which will be rolled out to campus Winter
quarter. Catalyst is an attempt to provide centralized support for the use
of technology in teaching within the university computing environment.
Catalyst aims to be a clearinghouse for resources, tools, and information
on teaching with technology. The catalyst Web site includes:
*Idea Guides providing information on promising uses of instructional
technology (electronic discussion, student collaboration, etc)
*Quick Guides providing a task-oriented map of technology implementations
(building Web sites, working with digital images, etc) and links to
how-to documents and useful links (C&C support pages, etc)
*How-to documents providing "1-2-3" instruction in the use of common
applications and techniques
*Profiles of campus educators and their experiences using technology in
teaching
*UWired Tools--our Web-based suite of instructional tools that are
centrally maintained and allow educators to easily add advanced
functionality such as quizzes/surveys, peer review, and email forms to
their Web sites
*Workshops--both schedules for UWired workshops and curricula that can be
used with the Catalyst how-to documents
In development for the past nine months, Catalyst has grown out of a set
of faculty focus groups and broad conversations UWired has had with
educators and computer support staff across campus. We hope Catalyst can
become a resource not just for educators, but for staff in departments and
labs who support faculty and teaching assistants. We are eager for
feedback on ways to make this resource useful to support staff, and hope
it can become a vehicle to amplify and disseminate the many exciting--but
often isolated--projects happening across campus.

topics, including web authentication, authentication technologies
and the evolving campus-wide infrastructure, and desktop
authentication for computer labs.

David Cox from UWired will discuss the planned architecture being
jointly developed by UWired and C&C which will be used to charge
jointly developed by UWired and C&C which will be used to charge
all printing in the UWired labs to the Husky Card.
o Arts & Sciences. Steve Graham
A growing number of computer labs in Arts & Sciences are
benefitting from Student Technology Fee support. Funding for
printing has been an ongoing problem, because most labs don't have
regular sources of support for this function, and policies vary
from lab to lab. We will discuss some of the challenges that A&S
labs are facing, and talk about some of the solutions that have
been tried or are proposed.
o Health Sciences Libraries. Jean Shipman and Adam Garrett
The Health Sciences Libraries has installed a local networked
laser printing system called "Print Queue Manager" produced by
"ITC Systems" based in Ontario, Canada. This system accepts the
same payment card as the HSL photocopiers and is available to both
UW and non-UW affiliated library users. Jean Shipman and Adam
Garrett will report on the HSL system and its use.
o UW Libraries. Mark Kibbey
The University Libraries north currently offer free impact
printing (low quality and slow) on many library X terminals and
some PC's. With the development of the Web and online journals
this is no longer satisfactory, and we have been looking at fee
based laser printing. Outside of the Health Sciences Libraries,
we do not have our own photocopy system, but rely on copy
services. This year we have experimented with a desktop printer
controlled by the copy services debit cards, and with sending jobs
directly to copy services printers.
Our requirements are more complex than some areas since we have
10,000 visits a week from non UW visitors. Ideally we need to
offer a mix of payment solutions including cash, visa,
departmental and Husky accounts. Copy services can handle most of
these charging methods and they are set up to handle larger jobs
and multiple copies which are problems for us.
Costing is difficult for us as the environment is changing and we
expect the job size to change as well as the number of jobs. Our
initial goal was to keep the costs the same as for photocopying
since that is the most common alternative in the Libraries. It may
be more important, however to have similar costs with other
printing units on campus to avoid job shifting.
