OnTechNews, published monthly, seeks to inform UW faculty, staff, and students about new and interesting technology to use in teaching, learning, work, and life.
Looking to save money on your cell phone plan? UW Technology has negotiated discounts with AT&T and T-Mobile that range from 15-18% for UW employees and 10-15% for UW students, depending on the carrier. As part of a larger, long-term mobile strategy that includes closer partnerships with these carriers, they will be investing in the infrastructure to increase cell coverage at UW Seattle, UW Medical Center, and Harborview Medical Center. The discounts also are available to UW affiliated organizations (Seattle Children's, Fred Hutchinson, and others).
For excellence in video production, UWTV was recently recognized with three awards at the 30th Annual Telly Awards. One program showcased the Informatics Program at the UW Information School, and another followed a young man through his heart transplant and recovery. UWTV also received a 2009 Emmy Award nomination for "Regaining an Active Life," which shows how the UW Medicine Sports and Spine Physicians team helps patients regain their active lifestyles.
Ancestry (Library Edition) combines a wide range of resources for doing genealogical or historical research. This UW-restricted database includes census, birth, marriage, death, military, immigration, emigration, and naturalization records. It also houses passenger lists, photos, maps, and historical newspapers and biographies, and online tools such as an ancestral chart. Data is from the U.S., United Kingdom, Canada, and some European countries.
Videoconferencing studios at UW Seattle allow you to meet face-to-face with people across the state or around the world without leaving campus. It's easier and cheaper than traveling, and reservations are available for as little as one hour or an entire workday. Visit Learning & Scholarly Technologies online to learn more.
Going Green is an email acquisition tool and newsletter sign up form developed by the UW Foundation that can help sustain our environment, reduce waste, and minimize print expenses. The form has a flexible API (application processing interface) that allows you to put it on your own site with just one line of code. This tool is available to everyone on campus using Convio for their bulk email. For documentation and information on how to use it, you can download the PDF.
Now, when you make an online gift to the UW, you can automatically let your Facebook friends know. After you give your gift, the receipt page has a button that links to the UW Foundation Facebook application, "Give to UW." The button pops up a window that lets you link to your Facebook account and post information about your gift. A Facebook wall announcement lets your friends know you support the UW and encourages them to do the same.
