UW Libraries Best in Nation! Celebrate May 17
The University of Washington Libraries wins the Excellence in Academic Libraries award from
the Association of College & Research Libraries, the highest honor an academic library can
receive. Join the May 17 celebration on Red Square, noon - 1 p.m., with UW President Lee
Huntsman, Libraries Director Betsy Wilson, and the Husky Marching Band. Free refreshments!
Catalyst WebQ, often
used in teaching, is also a powerful survey research tool. Faculty, students, and staff can
use it to conduct online surveys with audiences inside and outside UW. WebQ provides the
security to conduct anonymous or confidential surveys, and you can download your data for
analysis with Excel or SPSS. UW Human Subjects Division has even approved WebQ as a method for
collecting data from human subjects.
UW Libraries provides access to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online, which contains the
full text of the 20-volume print edition. Get convenient online access to the most
comprehensive dictionary of the English language without having to use a magnifying glass!
You'll find the OED Online, and many other dictionaries, under Reference Tools.
TOOLS & TIPS
Still Fighting Spam?
Join the growing ranks of some 16,000 UW students, staff, and faculty who divert most spam
from their UW Email Inbox. They use the UW Junk Email Filter. You'll find a link to the Junk
Email (spam) Filter service in the MyUW Email channel.
Email Attachments Blocked: Finding Alternatives
Due to security risks, particularly viruses, many email attachment types (.exe, .zip, etc.)
are now removed from messages before they are delivered through UW Email. There are other ways
to get your files to the right people. One solution is to use the Web-based Catalyst Tools.
Students and work groups can use EPost, a secure online message board, to post and download
files. Faculty can use E-submit to receive assignments.

TECH BIT: Video
Game Skills Pay Off for Surgeons A recent study found that
doctors who spend at least three hours a week playing video games make 37
percent fewer errors in laparoscopic surgery and finish up 27 percent
faster than their non-game-playing colleagues. Laparoscopy involves making
tiny incisions and manipulating the surgical tools by remote control while
viewing the procedure on a video screen.
