Requesting a New Subdomain

New UW subdomains

The UW Technology Customer Care Center is responsible for the administration of Domain Name System (DNS) domains or zones served by the centralized UW Technology servers. This includes almost all domains that appear as part of washington.edu such as u.washington.edu. Names that appear as part of washington.edu are very public and visible and so are subject to a process of approvals, including the head of the requesting UW department and the Vice President of Computing and Communications.

Subdomains under washington.edu are intended to provide a "home" for names of individual computers belonging to a particular department. Thus, subdomain names are usually derived from academic or administrative department names, typically as abbreviations such as "phys" for physics or "geog" for geography, or as acronyms such as "cfr" for the College of Forest Resources. Two-letter subdomain names should be avoided because they might conflict with two-letter country codes.

New non-UW subdomains

In addition to the washington.edu domain level, the Customer Care Center can provide support for approved non-washington.edu domain names, such as kexp.org. Domains not under washington.edu can require a registration fee that might vary dependant on the registrar.

Other information

Associating a UW NetID with a DNS domain will allow you to take advantage of the UW Certificate Authority program.
