UW NetID

Overview

The UW NetID service, operated by C&C, is the enterprise credential service for the University of Washington. UW NetIDs are used for authentication, accounts, e-mail addresses, and other computing purposes where unique identification is required. The UW NetID service manages the assignment and tracking of UW NetIDs, and connects to related services such as the Kerberos authentication service, Uniform Access services, etc.

UW NetID Types

There are different types of UW NetID. Each is subject to its own policies.

Authentication

UW NetID authentication is provided by the Kerberos authentication service. Web-based applications can use the Pubcookie/Weblogin service. Authentication via LDAP is not supported due to its inferiority to Kerberos and to the variability in how systems use LDAP for authentication.

Note: Even if you use local passwords with an application's local authentication method, UW NetIDs are strongly recommended to reduce confusion and permit future migration to central authentication and passwords.

Contact help@cac.washington.edu if you have questions about use of UW NetIDs in your application or service.
