Shibboleth IdP Roadmap

Some significant milestones for the UW Shibboleth Identity Provider:

  1. Winter 2005 - pre-production deployment
    Deploy a production-level pilot system to work with the Internet2 "InQueue" Federation (i.e. their low assurance, test federation).

  2. March 2005 - enhance Attribute Authority
    Develop mechanisms for generating and storing eduPersonTargetedId and for obtaining directory information to synthesize other attributes and entitlements. Establish default attribute release policies based on UW privacy policy.

  3. April 2005 - join InCommon federation
    Join InCommon federation as credential provider. Draft and submit InCommon Participants Operational Practices Statement.

  4. Spring 2005 - campus roll-out and publicity (postponed)
    Document installation and configuration of Server Provider software for initial roll-out. Develop support profile and troubleshooting guidelines for campus support staff. Document overall Weblogin strategy including relationship between Shibboleth and Pubcookie services.

  5. Spring/Summer 2005 - Shibboleth 1.3 upgrade
    Upgrade UW IdP to Shibboleth 1.3.

  6. Fall 2005 - Napster & Microsft Student Select Program added
    Configure entitlements and attribute release policies for bi-lateral arrangements with two new service providers.

  7. Spring 2006 - WebAssign added
    Configure entitlements and attribute release policies for new service provider that is also an InCommmon participant.

  8. Summer 2006 - Shibboleth-enable Web-hosting services
    Add some form of Shibboleth support to UW Web servers for faculty, staff, students, courses and departments.

  9. TBD 2005/2006 - US E-Authentication Initiative interoperability
    Prepare for scenarios where UW is acting as Credential Service Provider within the context of the US E-Authentication Initiative.

  10. TBD 2005/2006 - support location-based scenarios
    Solicit campus for scenarios that involve location-based entitlements (e.g. library walk-in use).
