The Shibboleth system provides web authentication services based on industry standards for federated single sign-on between organizations. Shibboleth is based on the SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) standard, published by OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards).
The UW Shibboleth Identity Provider (IdP) is complementary to the UW NetID "weblogin" service based on the Pubcookie single sign-on software. Pubcookie enables UW NetID-based single sign-on web authentication for websites and services within the UW community. Shibboleth enables inter-organizational single sign-on web authentication with additional support for authorization, privacy, and federations.
The UW is a member of the InCommon™ Federation, which links a number of US universities and service providers to provide interoperable authentication for a wide variety of web-based applications.
