Title: Why does WebPine have a 'welcome' screen?

Question:
The welcome to WebPine page is an unneeded extra step. It seems like a
waste of time to wait for it to load--I know I've opened WebPine! Can this
step be eliminated?

Answer:
On the surface, the welcome page does seem to be of little use, but it
has two functions that are very important.

  1. It gives us our only opportunity to present warnings or notices if
the application is out of service or there are important changes
that we need to inform you about.

  2. WebPine determines whose folders to open based on an authentication
'cookie' stored by the Web browser. People sometimes forget to
quit the Web browser when they finish and a second person using
the program could accidently read the first person's email -- so
the welcome screen acts as a notice about just whose account is
     being used.

so we may come up with a better solution.
