Title: Why does WebPine complain about unqualified addresses?
Question:
Some of the addresses I entered into my address book using Unix Pine are
just UWNetIDs. When I try to use them in WebPine, sometimes it doesn't
work, or it inserts the wrong address. What can I do to fix this?
Answer:
First of all, by an unqualified address we mean one that does not have
an "@" sign followed by some text. Thus:
erint
is unqualified whereas
erint@u.washington.edu
or
erint@somewhere.somehow.com
is fully qualified.
WebPine and Unix Pine behave differently in respect to the address book.
Unqualified addresses that are acceptable to Unix Pine may not be
acceptable to WebPine in its default setup.
WebPine's behavior toward unqualified addresses can be changed to mimic
Unix Pine by changing a configuration option. However, changing the
default setup is not recommended because it greatly increases the risk of
accidentally sending messages to incorrect recipients.
Instead, the best solution is to replace unqualified addresses such as:
erint
with complete addresses such as:
erint@u.washington.edu
This simple change will fix the problem while allowing all entries to be
used by both Unix Pine and WebPine, and will avoid problems of confusion
with the staff or faculty directory.
