Title: Can Pine block or 'filter' incoming email messages?
Question:
I'd like to have some automatic actions taken on certain email messages
that come to me. I may want to block some, forward others, or have messages
sorted into folders other than my Inbox. How can Pine help with this?
Answer:
Those needs fall under the term "filtering" email messages. Often,
filtering refers to screening and taking action on email messages *at the
time that they are delivered.* Pine does not do that, but it can screen
and act on messages at the time it opens a folder. This capability was
added to Pine in version 4.2x.
True email *delivery* filtering is now available for mail delivered to UW
Email Inboxes. If you'd like email delivery filtering, which includes
junk email filters, message forwarding and 'vacation' service, connect to

Then choose "Message Filtering" from the "Email" box.
Pine provides the capability to examine the messages in a folder when you
open it and to apply "actions" based on criteria that you specify. Pine
calls these "Filtering Rules."
To set up filtering rules in Pine, from the Main Menu choose:
"S"etup
"R"ules
"F"ilters
"A"dd
You should look at Pine's Help about this via
"S"etup
"R"ules
"F"ilters

You'll find that Pine can essentially block messages, though it is really
just discarding the messages when you open the folder. By using Pine's
"move" to folder actions, you can sort messages into different folders
based on criteria like who the message is from or particular text in the
Subject line. There are more capabilities too.
Note that if you sort messages into several folders, you may want to
configure Pine to "enable-incoming-folders" and define the folders in the
Incoming-Folders collection for easier access.
