Title: Why can't I send email outside the UW from my desktop email client?

Question:
I'm using an email program that runs on my desktop computer, not Pine on the
Uniform Access computers. I've configured my program according to the
instructions. When I send email messages to people at the UW, the messages
go through, but if I send to a non-UW address they don't work. What's wrong
and how can I fix it?

Answer:
Email originating outside of the UW (i.e., from a non-UW network) and
destined for an address outside the UW is not accepted by
smtp.washington.edu unless the connection is authenticated and
encrypted. This policy prevents the UW SMTP server from becoming a "spam
relay," forwarding on junk email coming and going across the Internet.

Using the SMTP service provided by your ISP, rather than the UW SMTP
service, (consult your ISP's tech support for the name of their SMTP
server) or setting the SMTP authentication and encryption option when
configuring your desktop software to use the UW SMTP server, solves this
problem.

authentication and encryption, please see:
