Title: How do I unsubscribe from a ListProc list?
Question:
I'm subscribed to a ListProc email distribution list and I want to get off
the list. What should I do?
Answer:
You'll need to know the email address of the ListProc server which runs
the list and the name of the list that you are subscribed to. If it is the
University of Washington ListProc server, the email address you'll need to
send commands to is:
listproc@u.washington.edu
If it is a ListProc server at some other site, look at the email you
are receiving to find the address of the server.
You can probably find the name of the list in the email messages that
you've been receiving (it will usually be the To field).
To get off a list, send email to the ListProc server containing the
following command in the Message Text (body) of the message:
unsubscribe listname
(where you substitute in the real name of the list for "listname.")
You should receive by email a confirmation that you've been removed from
the list. If you receive an error message and need help resolving the
problem, you should contact the list owner by sending email to
listname-request@u.washington.edu
(where you substitute in the real name of the list for "listname.")
The instructions above are specific to email distributions lists which use
the "ListProcessor" server (ListProc, for short.) There are other widely
used distribution list servers, and the commands they use may vary
somewhat from those shown above. You can usually get these server programs
to respond to a simple "help" as the only text in a message that you send
to the server address.
There is much more information available about email distribution lists
and electronic discussion. A good place to start would be to look under
the "Discussion forums" topic on the Web pages maintained by UW Computing
& Communications Network Information Center at:
