Title: How do filtering services provided by the EDM differ from others?

Question:
How are the Email Delivery Manager filtering services different from those
available to me via Pine and other email readers?

Answer:
The Email Delivery Manager provides "server side" email filtering. What
that means is that, when you use the EDM, messages are filtered as soon
as they are received, independently of your email reader.

The filtering that email programs like Pine give you is "client-side,"
which means that the program itself does the filtering. Filtering
doesn't actually occur until you run Pine.

The advantage of server-side filtering is that everything happens
automatically and independent of when you look at your email. This
means that the EDM can provide services that Pine filtering can't, such
as auto-response messaging and automatic message forwarding.

In addition the EDM provides a simple way to filter spam using the
UW spam scores embedded in email messages. And EDM has a simple
way to turn "vacation" auto-reply services on and off.
