Title: Does the UW have any plans to provide high speed remote access? Question: Does the UW have any plans to provide DSL or cable modem connections to its network? Answer: The University does not provide DSL or cable modem service at this time. However, using DSL or cable modem service provided by a commercial ISP will allow you to access most UW networking resources at higher speeds. If you choose to use a commercial ISP for connectivity, be aware that certain resources on the university network are restricted to computers connected directly to the network. These resources will be unavailable to you while connected via DSL or cable modem. Some of the departments that control these restricted resources have alternate methods of verification in place. For example, the most used resource of this type is the UW Library Database. UW Libraries has set up a Web site that provides information about accessing its database from outside the university network: http://www.lib.washington.edu/help/connect.html If you need help connecting to other restricted sites, contact the group or department that administers the resource in question to determine whether alternative methods of authentication are available for that service.
