iTunes U Project Charter
April 2007
1 Project Overview
1.1 i Tunes U
This is a tactical integration project of UW Computing and Communications Emerging Technology unit. We will be creating a Web site with information about the service, access to the iTunes site for campus content providers and log-on capabilities to reach private content specifically for courses.
1.2 Problem/Opportunity Statement
iTunes U is Apple's free service that allows universities to distribute multimedia materials via the popular iTunes desktop software on Macs and Windows PCs. It provides 500 GB of hosted storage at Apple. It is structured so that both public and private content can be very easily discovered and retrieved. Implementing this service at UW will provide additional opportunities for campus members to share audio and video materials to complement the existing services already in place.

1.5 Project Background
This project started as an invitation from Apple, inc. to use their new free service for the educational community. This service includes hosting multimedia materials on their servers in a University of Washington branded domain accessible from a UW Web page. Users of UW multimedia materials such as audio of course lectures, videos, performance documentation, etc., will be able to find and retrieve those materials from within the iTunes software. This technology is complementary to other podcasting systems and approaches at UW and provides an additional distribution channel for members of the UW community to the world as well as to a small private group such as a course. Because the iTunes software is widely used on both Macintosh and Windows platforms, students, faculty, and anyone else interested in UW intellectual content will have an easily accessible place to go to find the materials.
1.6 Objectives
This project will implement the service with a UW Web page for access, create the necessary log on, authentication and authorization scripts to use the service, establish a public side and a private side and provide support service to our partners in managing content on the system. Once operational, the service will provide an easy to use, highly visible location for the campus community to share audio and video materials with the public and amongst private groups such as a class or a student group. After authentication systems are integrated with our UW Net ID, it will be possible to assign instructors and group leaders rights to post content themselves without the need for someone to do so for them or the need for skills in creating XML and RSS feeds or knowledge of posting content to Web servers. Most of all it will provide the public, students faculty and staff access to UW content via freely available software that is widely used for listening and viewing podcasts.
