Emerging Technology

Our goal is to focus on technology that is slightly over the horizon and likely to be useful at the UW.

Oren Sreebny is Executive Director of Emerging Technology, Tony Chang is our Senior Strategic Integration Architect, Bill Corrigan is the Emerging Technology Project Manager and RL ‘Bob’ Morgan is the Senior Technology Architect, working primarily in the area of distributed authentication and authorization.

The MyUW team, consisting of Greg Barnes, Leman Chung, Scott Heyano, Rita Johnson, and Fang Lin, is also part of Emerging Technology.

iTunes U: Apple, inc. offers a free, hosted service where they provide a UW-branded store front accessible by the very popular software, "iTunes." With this service, we can make available interesting public speeches, news conferences, ceremonial events or interviews with distinguished members of the UW family to the general public, while also providing faculty and students spaces to post lecture podcasts available only to members of the course. Etech is working with members of Media Relations, the Libraries and other departments to get this service established.

Outsourcing Email: A scoping study is underway to enable the selection of one of two vendors (Google or Microsoft) to provide reliable e-mail and other messaging services to former students of the University of Washington, available anytime, anywhere via the WWW for life. The report will include a recommendation of one vendor. UW C&C currently offers a service for former students, faculty and staff know as MyUW.Net. The selected program will replace it.

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA): Etech and Office of Information Management (OIM) are working with various UW computing departments to understand what SOA means to the UW and will work together to help define a SOA strategy. Currently, Emerging Technology staff are participating with OIM staff to define a pilot project. OIM is taking the lead on this project
