Blocking of Email From Some Domains
The University of Washington central email routing facility is now blocking email from certain network domains because analysis has shown them to be the source of only spam messages. A list of the blocked domains is at the bottom of this page.
Blocking of these domains began on October 17, 2003. The blocked domains were identified by an analysis of spam scores from our PureMessage anti-spam software. A domain is classified as sending only spam if 95% of the mail they send receives scores at or above 50% on a weekly basis.
These blocks apply to all email sent to addresses that end in the following, regardless of whether the address is forwarded to another UW or non-UW address:
- @u.washington.edu
- @washington.edu
- @cac.washington.edu
- @alumni.washington.edu
- @myuw.net
More Information
- More domains may be blocked in the future, depending on spam score statistics and our threshold.
- We cannot accept nominations for domains or IP addresses to be included in our block list.
- If you feel a domain has been blocked erroneously, please contact UW Technology.
- There are no individual exceptions to these blocks. If you need to receive mail from one of these domains, it may be easiest to establish an email account with an outside ISP or use one of the many free webmail sites such as Hotmail or Yahoo.
Why This Policy is Necessary
This policy has been adopted with some regret. We continue to hold as an ideal that each end user should have the choice to receive all mail addressed to them, and should have effective tools to deal with unwanted messages, but the current volume of spam forces us to make some realistic compromises.
Between January and September of 2003, more than 65 million of more than 155 million messages were classified as spam. These numbers are only for the primary University mail relays, and do not include virus-infected messages. While the domain blocks will only affect a fraction of this load, they should significantly reduce the burden on both the email relays and the email hosts to which the messages are ultimately delivered.
We realize that this is an imperfect solution, however, resources are finite and spam apparently isn't. Please contact UW Technology with your questions or comments.
