ATL Quickstart: OpenBook

OpenBook is an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) scanning software used for scanning and reading printed text. This program is intended for people who are blind and/or visually impaired. (If you are looking for a similar accommodation for a learning disability, use Kurzweil 3000 or WYNN.)

Starting OPENbook

  1. Click the Start Button on the Window taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Click on "Program Files".
  3. Click on the "OPENBook" folder.
  4. Click on the "OPENBook" icon.
(The shortcut keys for OPENBook are <CTRL> + <ALT> + <O>)

The Openbook Unbound Scanner uses the numeric key pad to control the voice output and to enter commands. Below is the list of keys that are commonly used.

Scanning Text

  1. Place hard copy of text on the scanner's glass surface, oriented to the upper right corner with the text facing down.
  2. Press <F4> or <INSERT> to start scanning.

Reading Text

  1. OpenBook will automatically begin reading your text immediately after a page is scanned.
  2. To maneuver within the document, use the arrow keys.
  3. To have the program read the text again, press <F10> or <F12>.
  4. To toggle the speech output on and off press <CTRL> + <F5>.

Saving your document

To save a scanned document press <CTRL> + <S>.

Quitting OPENbook

To Exit OpenBook press <Alt> + <F> then press <X>.

Help

Press the minus key on the numeric keypad for instructions.
