ATL Quickstart: OPENBook 5.0 with ADF
OPENbook 5.0 is an Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) scanning software used for scanning and reading
printed text. This program is intended for people who are blind
and/or visually impaired. (If you are looking for a similar
accommodation for a learning disability, use Kurzweil
3000.)
Starting OPENbook
- Click the Start Button on the Window taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
- Click on the AT Applications folder.
- Click on the OPENBook 5.0 folder.
- Click on the OPENBook 5.0 icon.
(The shortcut keys for OPENBook are
<CTRL> + <ALT> + <O>)
Scanning Text
Place hard copy of text on the scanner's
glass surface, oriented to the upper right corner with the text
facing down. Press <SPACEBAR>, <F4> or <INSERT>
to start scanning.
Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)
The ADF can accommodate up to 25 individual
pages at a time. Place the pages face up and flush with the left
side of the ADF and proceed as instructed above.
Reading Text
- OPENBook will automatically begin reading your text immediately after a page is scanned.
- To maneuver within the document, use the arrow keys.
- To have the program read the text again, press <F10> or <F12>.
- To toggle the speech output on and off press <CTRL> + <F5>.
Saving your document
To save a scanned document press
<CTRL> + <S>.
Quitting OPENbook
To Exit OPENBook press "Alt" + "F" then
press "X".

Press the minus key on the numeric keypad
for instructions.
