How-to: Acquire & Install UWCA X.509 certificate

  1. If necessary, download the UWCA root certificate and install in your local machine's trusted root store.

You can determine whether the root certificate exists by using the MMC Certificate snap-in.

  2. Register as administrator of a DNS domain

You will need to register your workstation or development server please visit https://www.washington.edu/computing/ca/infra/, note step 1.5 and 1.6 which refer to registering your DNS. You may need to request a static IP address for your workstation.

  3. Install a UW Services Client Certificate by visiting http://certs.cac.washington.edu. Choose the "ActiveX" option. Once installed you will need to copy the certificate to the "Local Computer" store using MMC as it installs by default to the "Current User" store but needs to be under "Local Computer". You can right click the cert in your "Current User" store and paste it into the "Local Computer" store.
