Compliance at UW

Compliance

There are hundreds of federal and state laws and regulations, accreditation standards, and rating agency requirements with which the University must comply. Effective compliance is critical to maintaining funding sources, operating within legal requirements, and ensuring safe operations.

Compliance subject areas

The University of Washington organizes its compliance obligations into six broad areas that transcend organizational reporting lines or structures:

UW Medicine and Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) operate independent compliance programs.

Coordination

Compliance Services provides structural support and coordination for institution-wide compliance efforts.

Oversight

Oversight of the University’s compliance responsibilities is provided by the Compliance Working Committee, Compliance Steering Committee, Provost and President, and Board of Regents. This system of support, oversight and governance is critical to align the complex work of compliance at a large research institution.

Laws and regulations

The University tracks federal laws and regulations with which the university must comply, and provides guidance and best practices for faculty and staff on select laws and regulations.

Education

Compliance training and education modules help faculty, staff and students understand their compliance responsibilities.
