Events

Bike safety talk: “The Out-of-Box Experience: Cycling Sanely in a Mad, Mad World”
Monday, February 4, 2008, 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm, 142 Gerberding

Kent Peterson of the Bicycle Alliance of Washington—who, last year, brought us the popular “Neither Rain Nor Gloom of Night” class on biking safely in dark and wet conditions—will share his love of cycling, mixing the practical how-to of biking safety with a bit of his biking philosophy.

All-weather cycling presentation:
“Early Spring Bike Commuting in Seattle: a Primer for Conquering Moisture, Low Light and Chills in the Air ”
Tuesday, March 4, 2008, 12:00 noon - 1:00 pm, Ethnic Cultural Center (Asian/PI Room)

Chris Cameron, Bicycle Commuting Director at the Cascade Bicycle Club, will present a talk on how to continue or begin a bike commute during our glorious late winter/early spring months. Chris has taught thousands of new bike commuters how to dip their toes into pedals for their first plunge into bicycle commuting and has helped many seasoned bike commuters fine-tune their skills for enjoying bike commuting on a year-round basis. Come learn about what kind of clothing combinations work best for rain and cold, safe lighting and reflectivity strategies, how to keep your cargo dry and safe, the best tire and brake selections for rainy conditions, fender options and mounting techniques, wet-weather riding skills and traffic considerations, and the "hybrid commute".

Pedal Off
Thursday, February 28, 2008, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, Fisheries Sciences lobby and yard

Come register for Ride in the Rain or meet your team captain and teammates if you are already registered. The event will feature the Soaked to the Gills trophy hand off; shirt sales; Surplus Property bicycle sale; Hall Health Wellness Program's helmet, lights, and bells sale; and other fun activities to get the Ride in the Rain season kicked off.

Award Celebration and Merchandise Fair

If you ride 20 or more one-way commute trips during March, you will be invited to the Award Celebration and Merchandise Fair on April 17. We'll share highlights from the month, good company, and good food. Local bicycle and sports shops will be on hand to display their wares. Great prizes will be presented to top individuals and teams, and the "Soaked to the Gills Trophy", awarded to the team with Most Rides in the Rain, will go to its new home for 2008.
