New Face Around the OfficeU-PASS Welcomes Josh Kavanagh, New Director of Transportation Services
May 7, 2007 will mark the beginning of a new era in the Transportation Office—the folks who bring you U-PASS. Joshua Kavanagh is pulling up stakes in New Mexico and coming to Seattle to assume the role of UW Director of Transportation Services. As the Assistant Director for Parking and Transportation Services at the University of New Mexico, Josh spearheaded that department’s transition to online purchasing and services. He is also credited with the UNM’s successful program to enhance the exchange of information between Parking Services and the community. With that history, it’s no wonder he’s a fan of the UW’s new Commuter Services website which provides one-stop access to information about getting to and from the University and how to park on campus. When he thought of joining the UW and moving to Seattle, Josh’s enthusiasm was fueled by not only the stature of our institution, but a real attraction to the Emerald City itself. He has family in the Seattle area and holds fond memories of the community and the campus from past visits. Josh, his wife Cohni Acevedo, and their cats will make their home in the Ravenna neighborhood. Cohni is an architect and reporter for KUNM, Albuquerque’s Public Radio station. They’re both excited about the prospect of becoming bicycle commuters. In the best Seattle spirit, their goal is to be a one-car family that uses their car infrequently. Josh said he’s heard of U-PASS for years as a highly regarded and much-emulated program—but he was pleasantly surprised to learn how easy it is to get U-PASS customers to rave about it. In town for his interview last month, Josh chatted with the hotel shuttle driver. It turned out she is a UW student, and upon hearing the reason for his visit, she whipped out her U-PASS and regaled him with stories of how great it is. He’s looking forward to working with a program that instills such customer loyalty. To settle into his office, Josh plans to bring an old friend—a Japanese Good Luck Kitty (Maneki Neko) that he keeps on his desk to bring him luck in whatever he is doing. The good luck may have already begun, when asked what he’ll miss most about Albuquerque, Josh identified winter sun and green chili. We can’t do anything about the sun, but his office is a two minute walk to Aqua Verde.
