May is National Bike Month

It's a great month to try pedaling to work

During May, the Cascade Bicycle Club and other sponsors bring you an array of great city-wide bicycling events. And U-PASS joins with UW bike commuters to crank up the volume.

The Group Health Commuter Challenge is one of the biggest bike to work events on the west coast. During the entire month of May, riders track their bike commutes and miles online to compete for prizes and prestige. Last year 250 University of Washington riders participated, riding just under 28,000 miles to win top honors for total miles for an organization with more than 100 employees.

Starbucks Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 19. Get up a little early and put on your helmet. Join the fun as bicyclists all across Puget Sound pedal to work. Stop by one of 37 Commute Stations on your way in to pick up a free water bottle, snacks, maps, and bicycle commuting information. Enter the Starbucks Bike To Work Day raffle and have your bike checked by a bike shop station sponsor. See the map to find stations on your way to campus.

Also during May, Cascade Bicycle Club teams up with sponsors to hold afternoon bike rallies in several locations. The UW Bicycle Hubbub will be held along the Burke Gilman Trail in the park between University Way NE and Brooklyn Avenue. Stop by from 4-7 on Thursday, May 25 for live music, snacks, give-aways, bike adjustments, maps, bike information and more.

If you're a new bike commuter, take advantage of the comaraderie offered by a Bike to Work event. If you already bike to work, take on a new rider and teach them the ropes. Go to the Cascade Bicycle Club website for details and registration for 2006 Bike to Work events. www.cbcef.org.
