Ride in the Rain Highlights

In January the Transportation Office sponsored the first Ride in the Rain challenge. For some the thought of cold-weather cycling sent a shiver down their spine, but even knowing most of the challenge would be riding in the dark, wind, rain and sometimes snow, a surprising 786 staff, faculty and students took the challenge. Over 10 percent, or 104 of the participants were new bike commuters. A team consisted of four to ten people. There were 97 teams represented.

Collectively, teams cycled 76,676 miles and rode 9,348 roundtrips. Bikers tested their commuting mettle by riding 6,055 of these trips in the rain and the snow.

To put the Ride in the Rain challenge in perspective, the 76,676 miles ridden in January is comparable to riding around the earth almost THREE times. Don't let the weather be your excuse for not riding. Check out the June Challenge which launches with Bike to Work Day, May 21st.
