U-PASS Reports

Every year a survey is conducted prior to a Husky game to determine the average number of passengers in each car. The average vehicle occupancy rates are then applied to the actual number of vehicles parked at each game, to determine the percentage of the population at a Husky game that arrives by car.

The 1999 survey was conducted on October 16, 1999 at the Arizona game. We decided to take a sample count of cars that entered the University campus area, rather than a full census count. The AVO figures that were calculated from this data were consistent with census counts in previous years.

East Campus

In the northern part of the East section of Campus, an AVO rating of 2.5 was determined. In 1998 this figure was 2.4 and in 1997 the AVO was 2.5. Likewise, in the southern portion of East Campus, the 1999 AVO ranking of 3.3 is consistent with the 1998 figure of 3.3 and 1997 figure of 3.2.

South Campus

Gate 6 on Columbia road and Gate 7 at the Hospital are the two locations where counts are taken for the AVO survey. A 100% census was taken in this location.

Main Campus

Traffic passing through all gatehouses on main campus was counted. N-25 is a small lot that is excluded in the count, and so a surveyor usually stands at this parking lot to take counts. In 1999 this section was omitted. However, previous studies from this area show that less than 2.5 percent of vehicles to Main Campus park in N-25, so this omission is considered negligible.

West Campus

An AVO of 2.3 was determined for West Campus in 1999. This is comparable to the AVO figures of 2.2 that were determined in both 1997 and 1998.

In summary, the sample count used for 1999 is consistent with full counts that were conducted in previous years.
