U-PASS Reports

1996-97 U-PASS Results

Transit Ridership

Between 1990 and 1997, total campus ridership on Metro grew from 4.7 million to 7.8 million annual trips, a 68 percent increase. Ten percent of all trips taken in 1997 on Metro and Community Transit were taken by a U-PASS holder.

When the U-PASS was implemented in 1991, Metro added 57,000 annual hours of new service (a 20 percent increase) over an 18 month period and Community Transit added almost 3,000 annual hours. Most of the new service hours were added to existing campus routes but several new routes were developed to provide better service for UW commuters previously not served. The increase in transit service was one of the most important features of the U-PASS program. The cost of that new service was shared between the University and the two transit agencies.
