U-PASS Reports
1996-97 U-PASS Results
The U-PASS is an innovative transportation management program that offers a complete package of flexible transportation benefits at a very low price. The U-PASS makes using alternative commute modes a smart and easy choice for the more than 53,000 University of Washington students, faculty and staff.
The U-PASS began in 1991 as a partnership between the University and the two local transit agencies, Metro and Community Transit. The program was designed to meet a number of goals:
- provide better transportation services to University commuters;
- decrease the number of vehicle trips and in turn the need to replace lost parking with new parking facilities;
- achieve a 75 percent U-PASS participation rate; and
- mitigate potential traffic and parking impacts of University growth.
A U-PASS, priced at $28 per quarter for students and $39 for faculty and staff entitles participants access to the many elements of the program:
- Unlimited access to Metro and Community Transit buses
- Free carpool parking on campus
- Subsidized vanpool fares
- Free rides on the Night Ride shuttle
- Ridematch services
- Bicycle programs
- Discounts at stores and restaurants.
- Reimbursed Ride Home for emergencies
- Discounted daily parking passes.
Although this report covers the period September 30, 1996 through September 29, 1997, information gathered in autumn quarter 1997 is included if available.
