During the 1995-96 academic year, 44 local merchants offered discounts to U-PASS holders. For their participation in the program, merchants receive free publicity in U-PASS marketing collateral and are invited to participate in seasonal promotions and the annual autumn transportation fair. This element of the program was designed to encourage U-PASS participation particularly among students living on or near campus who do not need a U-PASS to commute to campus.
