Parking Options for Retirees

Complimentary Parking

Complimentary campus parking is available to fully retired UW retirees, their spouses or same-sex domestic partners (one permit per couple). Permit is not transferable to others, including relatives. To request a new ID card please contact the Benefits Office. A Retiree Identification Card presented to the Traffic Guide at one of the campus gatehouses entitles the holder to complimentary parking on a space-available basis. Upon arrival, please identify yourself as mobility-impaired if you need wheelchair or disability parking (see below). Your Retiree ID Card is not a parking permit. You must display a valid gatehouse-issued permit on your dashboard so that it can be read from outside your vehicle.

A gatehouse-issued Retiree Permit has a “U” designator, which allows retirees to park in most spaces, except:

  1. Disability or wheelchair spaces or lots including N22 (HUB) unless disability parking is requested*
  2. Restricted at "All Times, All Days" parking spaces or areas
  3. Reserved parking spaces
  4. Spaces marked University Vehicles Only, Physical Plant Vehicles Only, Service Vehicles Only and Truck Only
  5. Lot C14
  6. Lot C17
  7. The Triangle Garage or the Surgery Pavilion Garage (pay per use parking only, at the present time)

* Holders of Wheelchair (WC) Disability Permits may park in any wheelchair or disability space. Holders of Disability (D) Permits may park in disability areas but not in wheelchair spaces. Wheelchair and Disability permit holders may also park in other available regular spaces in their assigned parking area. Retirees who are temporarily disabled should stop at a campus gatehouse and request assignment to a disability parking area or space.

Reminder, please carefully check the signs in each lot and for each space before parking.

Restricted parking means that specific permit types only are allowed in an area. For example, the C14 lot is restricted at all times on all days to C14 permit holders. (Facilities employees who must respond to emergencies seven days a week, 24 hours a day use this lot).

Reserved parking refers to spaces designated for specific “R” (Reserved) permits only. No other vehicles are allowed to use reserved spaces during the posted enforcement hours.

ID cards are not parking permits and should not be left on the dash of a vehicle in lieu of a parking permit.

Parking for Special Events

Complimentary retiree parking on football game days and during special events is available in the Central Plaza Garage. Please show your Retiree ID at the gatehouse upon arrival. If you need football disability parking, please call 206-685-7167.

South Campus Parking

If you are going to the UW Medical Center, the Health Sciences Center, or another building on south campus, complimentary parking is provided in the South Campus Parking Garage (S1). If you are disabled and are going to the UW Medical Center, complimentary parking is also available in S1. (See below.) Please note that South Campus fills regularly M-F, 9-3.

If you are a UWMC patient or visitor of a patient and wish to use the Triangle Garage or Surgery Pavilion Garage, you must participate in the UWMC parking validation program. Parking in either garage is administered by the UW Medical Center (UWMC). If you have any questions relating to parking at the UW Medical Center, please contact the office of the UWMC parking manager at (206) 598-5275.

Disability Parking

When entering the campus, retirees with physical limitations should inform the traffic guide that they are physically challenged and request parking in a "disabled" area near their destination.

Re-employed Retirees

If you are re-employed by the University you are not eligible for complimentary retiree parking while you are employed, but you may purchase a Parking Permit, a Motorcycle Permit, Individual Commuter Tickets (ICTs) and/or a UW FlexPass or Pay-Per-Use-Parking (PPUP) if available. A retiree re-employed part-time at 40 percent or less may purchase a parking permit from either of the two Commuter Services Offices at 40 percent of the annual parking permit fee. ICTs are available at the regular fee. A U-PASS is available with the purchase of an SOV (Single Occupancy Vehicle) Permit. Please note that Parking Permits and Individual Commuter Tickets are restricted to the area designated on the permit unless an out-of-area permit is requested at the gatehouse. When requesting an out-of-area permit, your plastic UW Retiree ID Card must be presented to the Traffic Guide. Use of a Parking Permit or Individual Commuter Tickets (ICTs) eliminates the need to be cleared at a gatehouse each time you enter campus.

If you are re-employed at more than 40 percent, you may purchase a Parking Permit or public transit pass at the regular rates. Parking Permits restrict parking to the area designated on the Parking Permit unless an out-of-area permit has been obtained from the gatehouse. For parking fee information click here.
