Why was PPUP initiated?

Pay-Per-Use-Parking (PPUP) is an award-winning program designed to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicle (SOV) commute trips to campus by providing an incentive for not driving to campus on a daily basis. With PPUP, participants pay only for days they park on campus. They save money on vacation days, sick days, personal holidays or days when commuting via an alternate method. Once signed up, users swipe their Husky Card™ to access the West Campus Garage. Parking charges are deducted from each paycheck.

How does PPUP work?

Participants must sign up to be a PPUP member at either Commuter Services office. All participants enter the garage with a swipe of their Husky Card™. Your payment can be made by arranging for a payroll deduction (sign the form at Commuter Services when you sign up) or with a Husky Card Account debit. Add money to a Husky Card Account online at: http://hfs.washington.edu/husky_card/

PPUP program participation is renewed annually in the spring. If you would like to terminate your use of this option or if you are leaving the university, please notify the Permits Office at 206-221-3701.

Who is eligible?

Any permanent status employee with a valid Husky Card™ or ASE student is eligible to sign up for the Pay-Per-Use-Parking program as long as space is available.

How much does it cost?

After becoming a PPUP member, users with a paid U-PASS are charged $3.06/entry for parking 4 times or less during a pay period. Parking 5 or more times within a pay period costs $4.25/entry.

PPUP members without a U-PASS are charged $4.25/entry for 8 or fewer entries and $4.63 for over 8 days per pay period.

There is no charge for parking in the garage on weekends between noon Saturday and midnight Sunday.

Note : A pay period is the 1st through the 15th of a month or the 16th through the last day of a month.

PPUP participants with U-PASSes can carpool for .90/entry. The carpool entrance is on the Brooklyn Ave NE side of the garage. Each carpool member's Husky Card with a U-PASS will be swiped once. If re-entering the garage after a two hour period either PPUP member may use any entrance and no additional charge will be incurred.

How do I carpool in PPUP?

  • Two PPUP members with U-PASSes required

  • Enter on the Brooklyn Ave NE (south) entrance

  • Swipe both cards

  • The fee is .90 per carpool. (.45 will be charged to each person)

  • Valid U-PASS and PPUP membership required for PPUP carpools

  • If you enter at the carpool entrance without a second person, you will be asked to swipe your U-PASS twice and you will only be charged once at the regular U-PASS SOV rate. If a PPUP member without a U-PASS uses this lane they can swipe their card and will be charged the regular non-U-PASS SOV rate based on the number of times that pay period that they have parked.

  • You can leave and return to the West Campus Garage using any entrance. You will not be re-charged for that day.

Do I have In/Out privileges?

Yes, if you come to campus and park in the West Campus Garage as a carpool
you or the person with whom you carpool can later leave and re-enter any
entrance of the garage with the vehicle without incurring an additional
charge for the day.

If you come to campus and park in the West Campus Garage as a single-occupancy vehicle (SOV), you can later leave and re-enter the garage without incurring an additional charge for the day.

In summary, however you entered the garage on a day is how you will be
charged for the day.

I am a PPUP member and I sometimes need to park somewhere other than the West Campus Garage. What do I do and what am I charged?

PPUP Carpools: The PPUP carpool rate is available to members only when they arrive and enter the West Campus Garage together.  The PPUP carpool option is not available in E1 or at the gatehouse.

PPUP member SOV parking in areas other than the West Campus Garage: If you park out-of-area in E1 or elsewhere and it is the first time you have parked on campus that day, you will be charged the PPUP SOV rate.  If you have already parked in the West Campus Garage that day, you will not be charged.  The daily fee is based on where you park for the FIRST TIME, either as a PPUP SOV or PPUP carpool in the West Campus Garage or a PPUP SOV that is out-of-area when issued parking by a gatehouse. Regardless of where you park on campus including E1, you will be charged the PPUP SOV rate if you pay for parking by swiping your Husky Card.

The Pay-Per-Use-Parking program is only available in the West Campus Garage at this time.

What if I need to park somewhere other than the West Campus Garage occasionally?

For E1 parking, see above.  For any other lot, obtain a permit from a gatehouse. Once again, if you have already parked in the West Campus Garage, you will not be charged.  If you have not already been charged for parking that day, you will be charged a PPUP SOV rate.

What do I do if the West Campus Garage is full?

Go to a gatehouse for an out-of-area permit.

I am a PPUP member, but the card reader said 'NO PARKING PRIV' when I tried to park?

You may have outstanding charges that must be cleared before the system
will allow access to the West Campus Garage or allow out of area or
alternate vehicle permits at the campus gatehouses.  Once your account
has been cleared account access is automatically reinstated.

Pay-Per-Use-Parking program receives VISION 2020 award

The University of Washington's Pay-Per-Use-Parking program received a 2003 VISION 2020 award* at the Puget Sound Regional Council's General Assembly meeting.

"The VISION 2020 award winners show a high level of innovation, creativity and success. They are proof that our region is taking important steps to create a more livable future," says Sammamish Councilmember Kathleen Huckabay, who chaired the awards selection committee.

The Pay-Per-Use Parking Program is one of the University's flexible transportation programs. Employees are charged only for the days they park their car (rather than paying a flat fee for unlimited parking). On days employees choose not to drive to campus, they are not charged for parking and they save money. This provides them with an incentive to leave their vehicle at home.

VISION 2020 is a regional strategy adopted by central Puget Sound cities and counties that promotes a strong economy, efficient transportation, a healthy environment, and vibrant communities that are great places to live and work.
