Getting around the University of Washington campus safely--no matter how you get around--requires everyone to pay attention. Be aware of what is happening around you-- look, listen and respect the rights of others.

  • Obey traffic signals. If you don’t stop on red, what makes you sure someone else will?
  • See the whites of their eyes. Before crossing a street or trail, make eye contact with the driver of any approaching vehicle and signal your intent to cross.
  • Look before you leap. Stop and look both ways, then wait until oncoming vehicles come to a complete stop before crossing.
  • Be a flasher. Wear bright-colored or reflective clothing when biking or walking at night or in low-light conditions.
  • Don’t be directionally challenged. Ride your bike with the traffic flow. Walk facing traffic where there are no sidewalks.
  • Use your senses. Watch and listen for bikes and walkers on shared trails.
  • Don’t crash the party. Walk bicycles in dismount
    zones and other crowded areas.
