Film Soundtrack

My friend has finished editing a film. I am helping him with the
soundtrack. My plan is two borrow two music mics from a friend and record
stereo into a dat recorder. I am recording only a few instruments like
guitar and piano, so I won't need to mix down the audio. This is the first
project I've done like this and I would appreciate input and advice about
putting the equipment to its most effective use.
