Asian Americans in Hip Hop
I will be exploring the role Asian Americans play in the Hip Hop community/culture. With all the negative connotations associated with Hip Hop, I will be attempting to show the positive aspects of the culture and how individuals and groups involved are able to re-empower themselves through expression in creating and reaffirming their identities. Deeply rooted in the African American community, Hip Hop has spread, touching diverse communities worldwide, including the Asian American community. I hope to use visual representation in portraying the positive and empowering aspects of Hip Hop by exploring the culture through its many disciplines: spoken word, emceeing, djing, grafitti art, and breakdancing.
