Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service 2015

About the Event

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most urgent question is: what are you doing for others?”

Each year, the University of Washington in partnership with United Way of King County hosts the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service: an event that places nearly two thousand volunteers in day-long service projects throughout King County, providing vital people-power to organizations that support our county’s most vulnerable populations.

This event is part of the President’s United We Serve initiative which, calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our nations most pressing problems.

2015 Kickoff & Projects

This year, we we were honored to welcome Washington State Supreme Court Justice Mary Yu as our kickoff keynote speaker. For over 14 years, Justice Yu has developed a deep record of service both on and off the bench, supporting programs that develop civic responsibility in young folks and bringing socially-conscious leadership to local organizations. In addition to Justice Yu, two finalist from R.E.T.R.O.’s Winter Poetry Slam, Adillia Scott and Mariama  Suwaneh performed spoken word poems.  R.E.T.R.O. Revolutionary Poets is a student group, developed to create a forum for underrepresented students to express themselves.

Other honorable event partners include our emcees Briana Jarrett, ASUW’s black student commissioner and Magdelawit Negussie, president of the Black Student Union. And, Kickoff speakers Sheila Edwards Lange, vice president for minority affairs and vice provost for diversity and Blair Taylor, chief community officer at Starbucks.

After our kickoff, volunteers set records this year. Over 2,000 volunteers served in King County, donating 218,710+ hours worth of service to local organizations.
