Public service opportunity: Fuel Your Future Associate

Position Title:  Fuel Your Future Associate

Start & End Dates:  9/3/18 – 7/17/19

Fuel Your Future offers a winning combination by increasing access to federal meals programs in tandem with high-quality nutrition education. This year, 400 schools statewide will gear up to launch Breakfast after the Bell programs in 2019. The Food Security and Nutrition team will support local schools in the early adoption of this program, while also providing other food security and nutrition interventions, ranging from hands-on nutrition education lessons to mobile food pantries. Your Americorps team will increase equity in King County through these targeted strategies, which help give every student an equal chance to succeed. As a result of your service, entire neighborhoods will benefit from increased access to federal nutrition programs, nutrition education, and other food resources – leading to a healthier and more stable community.

You will be trained and coached to perform the following key duties:

  • Lead MyPlate-based nutrition education and evaluations for students in your assigned schools
  • Facilitate an afterschool meal site at your school, community center or library
  • Partner with local grocery stores and community programs to offer Family Market Nights at schools, which connect kids and families to expanded nutrition education, farm-fresh produce and fun programming.
  • Support mobile food pantries in schools, which bring fresh produce and food items directly to families, especially in communities where it is difficult to buy affordable or quality food.
  • Support the implementation of Breakfast after the Bell programs, to increase student access to school breakfast
  • Lead outreach strategies, outreach events, and service delivery strategies to increase access to the free Summer Meals program

Training and ongoing coaching will be provided throughout the year alongside 21 other Fuel Your Future Associates and the United Way Direct Service AmeriCorps cohort.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Great with children and parents
  • Passionate believer in social justice and food justice
  • People-oriented, with exceptional communication and relationship-building skills
  • Independent and collaborative problem solver
  • Data tracking, digital collaboration, and professional communication
  • Ability to support school breakfast programming as early as 7 a.m. Monday – Friday
  • Ability to speak a second language is helpful, but not required
  • Event planning or lesson planning experience is helpful, but not required
  • Nutrition education or classroom management experience is helpful, but not required


  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States
  • Must be available 40 hours a week for 5 days a week
  • Able to serve 10.5 months and reach a total of 1700 service hours.
  • Must go through a Washington State Patrol background check, FBI background check and National Sex Offender Registry Check, plus state of residence background check if not living in WA currently
  • F1 VISAS are not sufficient


  • Monthly stipend of $1,307 before deductions and withholdings.
  • Basic health insurance (not including vision coverage).

  • $5,920 education award (10.5-month positions) that can be used for future schooling or to pay off existing qualified student loan debt (upon successful completion of the service term).
  • $2,907 education award for half-time (6-month) positions.
  • Forbearance (temporarily postponing paying off a loan) of qualified student loans during the service term.
  • Payment of interest on qualified student loans that accrued during the service term.
  • Serving in a full-time AmeriCorps position qualifies as “employment” towards the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
  • Public transportation pass (ORCA)
