Position description:

The internship at Street Youth Ministries (SYM) is an exciting opportunity to invest a year into your vocational and spiritual development. Interns can expect to be immersed in a vibrant, faith-based non-profit setting, working alongside staff to provide programs and support for youth and young-adults experiencing homelessness.

SYM’s Intern Program is designed around several main tenets that support intern growth and the central vision of SYM’s work. Interns will have the opportunity to:

  1. Explore gifts for ministry and vocational calling
  2. Develop a healthy work ethic
  3. Work on a team in a faith-based, social service setting
  4. Learn about the causes & effects of youth homelessness

 

The Internship is a full-time work position (40-50 hours/week) that includes some nights and weekends. The expectations and responsibilities of an intern include but are not limited to:

 

  1. Explore gifts for ministry and vocational calling

             Attend annual vocational internship retreat (partnership with Murdock Trust Foundation)

             Meet weekly with SYM staff

             Participating and providing leadership in SYM’s programs

 

  1. Developing a health work ethic

             Office/administrative work

             Participating as a fully-invested member of SYM’s staff

             Learning how to take time off and integrate self-care into your routine

 

  1. Work on a team in a faith-based, social service setting

             Attend weekly SYM staff meeting

             Experiencing the different roles that can be a part of non-profit work

             Working in drop-in and other programs

             Helping to develop programs &/or support of SYM

 

  1. Learn about the causes & effects of youth homelessness

             Develop personal relationships with youth and young adults accessing SYM’s programs

             Participate in regular trainings and required readings

 

SYM is hiring two interns for the following year. While both internships will include direct experience working with youth, each will have a different sub-focus:

 

             One with a specific focus on direct-service & working directly with program staff. Examples of work or projects in this area include building direct relationships with a number of youth and developing programs directly serving youth alongside program staff.

 

             One with a specific focus on supporting the development, events & volunteer side of the ministry. Examples of work or projects in this area include supporting fundraising events, helping with development work, and recruiting/supporting SYM volunteers.

 

Time commitment:

9 months

 

Skill requirements:

Bachelor’s degree completed at the start of internship (exceptions may be considered).

Candidates that are most qualified for the position demonstrate a love for Jesus and the Gospel, strong relational skills, and a desire to experience direct service work in a social service setting.
