Student Telephone Services (STS) is part of the University of Washington
(UW) campus telephone system. The UW Technology Service Center provides

(Cordless phones are not recommended because several cordless phones used
in close proximity can interfere with making and receiving calls.)
- Unlimited local calling
- Call waiting
- Last number redial
- Call transfer
- Three-way / Conference calling
- Call forwarding
- Speed dialing (upon request)
- Personal Telephone Number

area. Outgoing calls are made like any other local number using 10-digit dialing.
Calls

number to place their calls toll-free to you. To find your community's local
RCS number,

www.washington.edu/cac/care/rcs.

incoming calls whether you take the call or not.
CIDS is optional service that you order directly from STS at 206-934-1111. You must provide your own Caller ID phone or peripheral unit. Charges for CIDS are quarterly and are not prorated for partial quarter service. You are responsible for paying for CIDS each quarter until you cancel the service directly with STS. Housing and Food Services (HFS) and local Lorig leasing offices are not responsible for cancelling CIDS
NOTE: Call waiting ID and [*] [6] [9] are
not available features at this time.

automatically be sent to the voice mailbox for the number called.
Activate immediate voice mail coverage:
(You will hear a single ring, but will not be able to answer any of these calls)
- Enter [*] [7] [9].
- Your phone will ring once when a call is forwarded to voice mail.
Deactivate immediate voice mail coverage:
- Enter [*] [7] [8].
- Your phone will now ring normally.
Modem use: When connecting a modem, turn off your call waiting. This will
prevent the signals from interfering with your connection.
Cordless phones: They are convenient but not
recommended. Cordless phones in close proximity can cause
problems
such
as
interference (i.e. static, or hearing other conversations), calls for different
numbers ring through while those to your number do not,
etc.
Local calls: When making calls from a campus number to local:
- UW non-732 numbers: Enter last 5 digits
- UW 732 numbers: Enter 7 digit number (732-####)
- Seattle and other RCS numbers: Enter 9 + 10 digit (area code + 7 digit number)
These instructions also apply when forwarding calls and transferring calls to these numbers, as well as adding these numbers to an existing call. (Refer to Dialing Instructions).
Peak calling periods: Heavy call volumes often occur
during emergency situations (i.e. inclement weather) and popular calling times.
Excessive redialing of busy numbers can cause an
overload condition, diminishing the quality of service. During these
times, please try your call again after 30 seconds.
Service
will return to normal when call volume subsides.
Telephone doesn't ring: Verify that your telephone is
plugged into the correct jack securely, the ringer is set to the "on" position,
and
the volume is turned up.
Hear dial tone but cannot call out (cannot break dial tone): Verify
that your
telephone is set to tone, not pulse.
Telephone rings once and does not allow the call to be answered: Immediate
voice
mail
coverage
may be activated. Deactivate
it
by entering [*] [7] [8]. (Refer
to Send Calls to Voice Mail).
Unable to make an off campus call: Enter [9] before
the area code and number that you want to
call. (Refer to Dialing Instructions).
Unable to make a long distance call: You must obtain an STS authorization
code for Marathon Communications service to make a direct dial call. (Refer to Long Distance). If you choose to use another long distance provider, you can only
use their services with a calling card or with operator assistance. (Refer to
Dialing Instructions).
Message waiting indicator: If you hear a series of tones
indicating that messages are waiting but when you check there are none, call
your
own phone number from your room and leave a test message. Hang up. Access your
voice mailbox again and erase the test message. Hang up again and check your
mailbox a few minutes later. The indicator should be gone. Conversely, if you
think you have a message but do not hear an indicator, check you voice mailbox
anyway. If you have any messages, listen and clear them. Then use the test
message
routine above to reset your message waiting indicator.
