Exhibit Opening Day: A-Y-P: Indigenous Voices Reply
Sat., May 30, 10 am - 4 pm

Challenge your perceptions of Seattle's first world's fair at the opening day of Alaska-Yukon-Pacific: Indigenous Voices Reply at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. This new exhibit, on view at the Burke from May 30 – November 29, juxtaposes historical objects and photographs from the 1909 fair with contemporary artwork by Native artists exploring how perceptions and understanding of indigenous cultures have changed, or not changed, over 100 years.

On Saturday, May 30, spend a day at the Burke Museum learning more about the indigenous communities who were represented at the 1909 exposition, tour the new exhibit, and meet several of the 16 participating contemporary artists who have contributed to A-Y-P: Indigenous Voices Reply.

  • At 10 am, join Friends of Seattle's Olmsted Parks for a walking tour of the UW grounds that will explore the legacy of the A-Y-P Exposition and its role in developing the University of Washington campus. Participants must preregister by calling 425-885-3173; meet at the museum. 
  • At 10:15 am, tour the exhibit with Burke curators Robin Wright and Deana Dartt-Newton. 
  • At 11 am, attend panel discussions with many of the 16 artists who contributed contemporary works to the exhibit.  
  • At 12:30 pm, join Friends of Seattle's Olmsted Parks for a walking tour of the UW grounds. Sign up at the museum admissions desk.  
  • At 1 pm, tour the exhibit with Burke curators Robin Wright and Deana Dartt-Newton. 
  • At 2 pm, attend panel discussions with many of the 16 artists who contributed contemporary works to the exhibit. 
  • At 3:30 pm, join Friends of Seattle's Olmsted Parks for a walking tour of the UW grounds. Sign up at the museum admissions desk.

A-Y-P: Indigenous Voices Reply was organized by the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. Major support for the exhibition has been provided by 4Culture, the Bill Holm Center for the Study of Northwest Coast Art, the Hugh and Jane Ferguson Foundation, John and Joyce Price, the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture Affairs, and the UW Office of the Provost.
