Executive Director, Dr. Julie Stein |
Letter from the Director – Fall 2009
On behalf of the entire Burke Museum, I extend my deepest thanks to our loyal members and donors for another year of support. We are acknowledging our supporters this year in an online report: I hope that you will peruse this list of our generous donors, express your thanks when you see them, and enjoy highlights and wonderful photographs from the past year. The remarkable support of our members, donors, and friends has carried the Burke through the past 118 years to our exciting place within today's museum world. Now we find ourselves at a truly transformative moment in our history as we move forward with a predesign study for the new Burke Museum building. The predesign is the precursor to a major expansion of the museum, which currently occupies a 1962 campus building. The study will clarify the facility's needs and evaluate various options for improvements that may involve renovation, expansion, or a brand new structure at our current campus location. We at the Burke remain dedicated to serving our partners – students of all ages, Washington State residents and visitors, indigenous and ethnic communities, researchers and scholars, and natural history and cultural enthusiasts – and to the stewardship of the state's collections of natural and cultural heritage. The current facility served us well for decades but now challenges and limits our ability to address effectively our growing needs. The Burke Museum intends to lead our statewide efforts to practice environmental sustainability by pursuing the highest level of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification through the building process. Like our move to an online newsletter, we believe that the choices we make for a new or renovated building reflect our shared values of conservation and sustainability. We are delighted to be working with the award-winning architectural firm Olson Sundberg Kundig and Allen on the predesign study. This launches a process to ensure that the citizens of and visitors to the Northwest will enjoy expanded access to Washington State's premier museum of natural history and culture. As always, we at the Burke thank you for your support, enthusiasm, and partnership as we embark upon this exciting new venture. More Information: |
