Burke Museum's Director, Dr. Julie Stein |
Letter from the Director – Fall 2007
As director of the Burke Museum, I have the great privilege of working with scores of wonderful members, students, staff, and faculty. In this letter and coming ones I would like to use this space to thank a group of Burke volunteers who work tirelessly, and largely anonymously, on behalf of our museum—the dedicated board members of the Burke Museum Association (BMA). The board members challenge themselves to raise funds for our critical annual fund, the operating monies that support programs and collections in every corner of the museum. This support enables us to grow and prosper while sustaining the excellence associated with the Burke. This letter will introduce you to our board's fundraising committee. We deeply appreciate their enthusiastic support for the museum. David Brown chairs the fundraising committee and led the previous development council. He is a retired investment banker and collector of contemporary Northwest Coast art. Mary Dunnam, a community volunteer who has assisted with Burke fundraising, is a new member of the BMA and the Burke's representative to the UW foundation Board. Ellen Ferguson, a long-time Burke advocate, in 2007 received the Washington Museum Association's Award for Individual Excellence and the Women's Funding Alliance Inspirational Philanthropist Award. George Moynihan served for 23 years as executive director of the Pacific Science Center and now serves on the Washington State Historical Society Board of Trustees. Jennifer Schubert is a lawyer who also holds a PhD in paleontology and taught at the University of Miami. She joined the BMA in 2002 and now serves as its president. David Towne formerly headed Seattle Parks and then the Woodland Park Zoo. A leader in strengthening public-private partnerships, he guided a critical bond issue for the zoo, and led its first capital campaign. The Burke is fortunate to have such talented people guiding our fundraising efforts. I hope you have many opportunities to meet and chat with these remarkably dedicated friends of the Burke.
