Natural History Scientific Illustrations 2005: Student Art Exhibit
June 30 August 28, 2005
The Burke Museum hosted an exhibit of scientific illustrations as part of a student program at the University of Washington. This exhibit was the culmination of an intensive, nine-month course of study for students in the UW Extension Scientific Illustration Certificate Program. The program is designed for artists and illustrators aspiring to create visual materials to enhance the understanding of science. It also appeals to scientists who wish to add visual illustrations and art skills to their expertise. "The scientific illustration certificate progam is a marriage of science and art that results in exquisite and scientifically accurate depictions of the natural world," said UW Extension scientific illustation program manager Carol Nicolay. The works of art cover a variety of subject matter, from animals and insects to skeletal structures and plant life that students observed while on field trips to Skagit Flats, the Seattle Aquarium and Woodland Park Zoo. Media used by the budding artists include carbon dust, color pencil, and stipple pen. |
