Money: A Medium of Culture
March 17 – October 2, 2005

From coins to corn and feathers to stone...money comes in many forms.

See early money from Asia, China, and the Mediterranean. View coins in bronze, gold, silver and electrum, including a rare Tetadrachm Athena's Owl, American paper money in the form of milled dollars, schillings, bond notes, treasury notes and early American coins.

Exotic and valuable trade items that took the place of the standard "minted money" are also on display, including a Tlingit "copper" from Alaska, a stone disk from Yap, corn as money, feather money and dentalium and wampum shell money from Native American tribes, once used by American colonists and regional tribes for trade.

The Money display case is limited to one case in the Burke Room and features about 12 objects and was created courtesy of the Burke Museum collections and from the private collections of John Goodfellow.

Note: the Burke Room is a multi-purpose room and is not always open to visitors during regular museum hours.
