Native American Arts Celebration, August 18 & 19
The Burke Museum hosted a full weekend of Native American carving, drum making, weaving, storytelling, and dancing as part of the exhibit, In the Spirit of the Ancestors: Contemporary Northwest Coast Native Art.

In Search of Giant Squid Opening Day, September 22
Opening day featured activities for squid fans of all ages, including tours of the exhibit with cephalopod specialist Alan Kohn, squid dissections by the Seattle Aquarium, sea shanties by Capt. John Burke and Blue Peter, a children's activity with the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, and cephalopod inspired poetry form Seattle's own Cephalopod Appreciation Society.


In Search of Giant Squid Teacher Open House, September 27
Sushi, drinks, and music provided the atmosphere for a fun evening for educators and their guests, including free admission to all of the museum’s galleries as well as a special teacher workshop about the In Search of Giant Squid exhibit. Museum educators were on hand to demonstrate all that the museum has to offer teachers and students in the Pacific Northwest.

Dìa de Muertos at Seattle Center, Oct 27 & 28
Close to 600 people stopped by our tables to make calaveras de Frida Kahlo, or Frida Kahlo skeletons, designed by local Mexican artist Isaac Hernàndez Ruiz.
Families made puppets together.
The Frida Kahlo calaveras were beautiful and colorful.
Generations celebrated Dia de Muertos together at the Seattle Center.
Some superheroes attended and made puppets.
People took their calaveras with them.
Nearly 600 people made calaveras with us.


Northwest Clan Pole Raising, October 28
A ceremony in the Burke courtyard included dances by People of the Salmon and People of the Copper Shield groups and the installation of a nine foot Northwest Coast Clan post. Read more...

Meet the Mammals, November 3
From whales to wombats – visitors discovered the amazing diversity of mammals from around the world at this all day family event. Scientists displayed specimens and shared their expert knowledge of the animal kingdom. Visitors examined skulls, skins, and skeletons, and even assembled an orca whale skeleton with our friends from the Seattle Aquarium!

As snow drifted down on the University of Washington campus, 26 teachers were busy thinking about ways to connect their students to Washington’s incredible diversity of life.

Homeschool Day, December 4
More than 100 students and their families joined us for hands-on learning and activities led by Burke educators.
Educator Tim Stetter led a conservation challenge based on the Yellowstone to Yukon exhibit
Parents and students learned together
Students made their own Northwest Coast masks in our Pacific Voices gallery
Students learned about salmon and made model fish traps
Students handled real fossils in our Life and Times of Washington State exhibit
Everybody had fun!
