Past Workshops
Educators were welcome at all of these workshops, though some workshops were also open to the public. Rocks and Minerals of Washington State Teacher WorkshopOn a rainy Saturday in March twenty nine teachers met for fun with Rocks and Minerals. Dr. Liz Nesbitt led participants through the Burke's Life and Times exhibit focusing on geology basics and how they apply to Washington State. Next, participants explored the new Rocks and Minerals of Washington Burke Box practicing classroom activities designed specifically for use with the box. This workshop was the first in a series to introduce new traveling study collections developed for the Burke Museum in a Box program. Educator Open HouseMore than 80 people took advantage of this relaxed, after-hours event, which included refreshments, hands-on activities, and Education staff to acquaint teachers with Burke Education resources. Washington's Web of Life Teacher WorkshopAs snow drifted down on the University of Washington campus, 26 teachers were busy thinking about ways to connect their students to Washington's incredible diversity of life. Día de Muertos: Traditional Arts for Your ClassroomTwenty-five local teachers had the unique opportunity to learn about Dìa de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, from two local Mexican artists. Teacher Open House: Schools, Sushi, and Squid, Fall 2007Sushi, music, and a life-size model of the elusive giant squid set the scene for this special teacher workshop. Lichens of Seattle Workshop, Spring 2007 Led by lichen expert, Dr. Katie Glew, participants marveled at this intricate partnership between algae and fungus.
