Bats

Description: Included in this collection are multiple slides on common and endangered bats in America, cassette tape and slide set on echolocation, a poster, video, Stellaluna puppet and book, bat specimens, little brown bat model, multiple resource books, and an educational guide to bats created by Merlin Tuttle and Bat Conservation International.

Bird Identification

Description: This collection focuses on how to identify birds in their natural environment and includes preserved specimens of a hummingbird, warbler, swallow, starling, and cedar waxwing, and a barn owl wing and head, seagull wing, and flicker wing. There also are 18 slides of birds commonly found in and around Seattle.

Bills and Claws

Description: More than 25 individually mounted specimens of skulls, heads, and feet (claws) from a variety of bird species are included in this collection.

Local Birds (Classroom Display) *

Description: This small exhibit (not hands-on) measures 2 feet by 2 feet and contains mounted specimens of a red-shafted flicker, saw-whet owl, marbled murrelet, belted kingfisher, and evening grosbeak. (Note: This collection cannot be mailed.)

Owls (Classroom Display) *

Description: In this collection a great horned owl and short-eared owl are individually mounted in cases in perching, natural positions. The short-eared owl is behind glass and cannot be touched. The great horned owl is not behind glass and can be touched gently. (Note: This collection cannot be mailed.)

Fish *

Description: With over 15 actual fish specimens in jars, this collection introduces students to the diversity and complexity of fish. Designed for a broad spectrum of grade levels, this collection also includes a fish model, fish skeleton, fish scales, fish bones, poster, video, salmon software, multiple secondary resources, and a manual with lesson plans.

Insects *

Description: This collection offers a fascinating insight into insects and their world. Included are extensive lesson plans for grades 1–12 and four boxes of local insects, four boxes of local butterflies and moths, and one box of unusual, non-native insects. Also included: "Build Your Own Bugs" stamps and book, poster, magazines, multiple reference materials, video, CD-ROM SimAnt software, and a 5x loupe.

Mammals

Description: The skulls of a bear, beaver, bobcat, deer, mole, and fox, and a mounted small brown bat are included in this collection.

Local Shells

Description: This collection contains more than 40 different types of common shells found on local beaches, including oysters, mussels, clams, limpets, moon snails, and a geoduck.

Tropical Shells

Description: This collection includes shells from tropical regions of the world, such as cowry, murex, volute, and clam shells, and a chambered nautilus.

Marine Invertebrates

Description: This collection contains mounted specimens of sea snails, limpets, sea stars, sand dollars, crabs, bivalves, and chitons with anatomical drawings and books.

Whales

Description: This collection includes an ear bone from a fin whale, baleen from a bowhead whale, the upper jaw of an orca, and the skull of a harbor porpoise. Also included are information cards on various whale species, a whale measurement rope, and various books.
