Alaskan Arctic

Description: This study kit includes snow goggles, a labret (lip ornament), pair of sealskin boots, kayak model, model snowshoes, and several other artifacts, along with 20 slides and a curriculum packet from the Smithsonian Institution titled Of Kayaks and Ulus.

Native People and the Environment of Washington

Description: Native uses of the environment both east and west of the Cascades are depicted through sample raw plant materials mounted under glass, tools such as a wedge, adze, digging stick, and fish hooks, and products including baskets, a cattail mat, and a cedar bark canoe bailer. Also included are a set of twenty slides of contemporary Northwest Coast art.

Native Peoples of the Northwest Coast

Description:A house model, bentwood box, adze, halibut hook, stone maul, trade beads, sinker stone, basket, and other tools represent coastal cultures of southeast Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington. Books and video, The Box of Daylight, are also included.

Native Peoples of Puget Sound

Description: Artifacts from the Coast Salish culture include a canoe model, salmon tongs, adze, maul stone, projectile points, dentalium and trade beads. Also included are weaving tools such as a spindle and whorl, mat creaser, mat needle, and bone awl, as well as examples of a cedar bark mat frament, basket, and wool blanket piece. Other resources include an audio cassette: Music of the Indians of the Southern Northwest Coast, books, and a contemporary Salish print by Susan A. Point.

Northwest Coast Potlatch

Description: This collection includes artifacts used by ceremonial dancers of the Northwest Coast. It includes a cedar bark neck ring, beaver crest mask, dance apron, bird rattle, and a whistle made from alder wood.

Description: Imagine making your own candles or grinding your coffee by hand. Handle artifacts that help you understand how pioneers in Washington State lived, worked, and played. Some of the artifacts included in the kit are handmade nails, a sarsaparilla bottle, homemade ice skate, clay marbles, ox shoe, and powder horn.
